Corn silage production: optimal dry matter and inoculant use

Optimal corn silage production relies on precise harvesting timing and effective fermentation processes. For successful preservation, a dry matter content of approximately 32% to 36% is considered ideal. While observing the milk line in the grain can indicate maturity, measuring dry matter directly from field samples provides the most accurate results. Harvesting too early can lead to high moisture levels, while delaying harvest may cause excessive drying, affecting chopping and compaction.

To improve silage stability and nutritional value, the use of inoculants is recommended. These products provide selected lactic acid bacteria strains that accelerate pH reduction and protect against yeast and mold. Research by Pioneer indicates that inoculants can improve dry matter recovery—the amount of nutrients preserved from harvest to feeding. Higher recovery rates reduce losses caused by plant respiration, oxygen exposure, and spoilage, ultimately lowering livestock feeding costs.
