Cornell University gang rape probe: NY appoints special prosecutor

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to lead a criminal investigation into an alleged gang rape at a Cornell University fraternity in October 2024. The decision follows revelations that the initial investigation by the Tompkins County District Attorney's office was mishandled, with allegations that crucial details from the victim's statement were omitted from reports sent to prosecutors.

The accuser, identified as Jane Doe, alleges she was drugged with ketamine and sexually assaulted by seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity. While the local district attorney initially declined to file charges in 2024, citing a lack of evidence of a crime, the case has been reopened following a civil lawsuit filed by the victim.

Governor Hochul has also called for legislative reforms in New York to address laws regarding sexual assault and voluntary intoxication. She argued that voluntary substance consumption should not serve as a legal barrier to proving a lack of consent in sexual assault cases. Cornell University has expressed support for these legislative initiatives and the appointment of the special prosecutor.
