Cornell University rape allegations trigger special prosecution

A civil lawsuit filed in September 2026 by a former student, identified as Jane Doe, has reignited a criminal investigation into an alleged gang rape at Cornell University’s Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024. The plaintiff alleges she was drugged with ketamine and assaulted by seven fraternity members over several hours.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has intervened, accusing local authorities of failing to conduct a thorough investigation and appointing State Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to lead the case. This follows reports that the Tompkins County District Attorney’s office initially declined to pursue charges after reviewing only a summary of the victim's statements, rather than full interview transcripts.

Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff described the situation as “deeply disturbing” and has pledged transparency, including an independent external review of the university’s handling of the incident. The case has sparked a massive social media movement under the hashtag #IAmJaneDoe, where women post in solidarity to protect the plaintiff's anonymity following attempts by some individuals to reveal her identity online. The incident has also renewed calls for legislative reform in New York regarding sexual assault laws and consent involving intoxication.
