Cornell University suspends fraternity social events following sexual assault allegations

Cornell University has announced a suspension of all fraternity parties and social events at its Interfraternity Council houses through the end of the 2026-2027 academic year. This decision follows intense campus protests and a civil lawsuit filed by a student, identified as Jane Doe, who alleges she was drugged and gang-raped by seven fraternity members at a Chi Phi house in 2024.

President Michael Kotlikoff introduced a zero-tolerance policy, stating that any fraternity violating the ban will face immediate emergency suspension. To reform campus safety, the university is transferring investigative authority for sexual assault allegations to independent, trauma-informed investigators from the New York State Police. Additionally, Cornell will appoint a dedicated case manager within the Office of Civil Rights to support survivors.

Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates has been appointed to lead an independent review of the university’s policies and practices. Meanwhile, the faculty senate is debating a resolution expressing no confidence in the administration's ability to address sexual misconduct, following claims that the university's initial response was insufficient.
