Cornell University gang rape investigation reopened

Prosecutors in Tompkins County have reopened a criminal investigation into an alleged 2024 gang rape at Cornell University involving seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity. The decision by District Attorney Matthew Van Houten follows a civil lawsuit filed by a student, identified as Jane Doe, which brought new evidence and public scrutiny to the case.

While the initial 2024 investigation did not lead to charges—with Van Houten stating that early statements did not clearly allege being drugged or incapacitated—newly surfaced transcripts and legal filings suggest the accuser told campus police she was “completely and totally incapacitated” and “100% confident” she had been raped. The lawsuit also alleges the use of ketamine and alcohol, and includes evidence of fraternity members discussing the incident in group chats.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has called for an independent review of Cornell University’s handling of the matter. Although the university previously conducted a Title IX investigation resulting in expulsions and suspensions, the case has sparked intense debate regarding institutional safety and the efficacy of campus reporting systems. A state-mandated survey recently noted that 35% of undergraduate women at Cornell reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact during their time at the university.
