Cornell University is facing intense scrutiny following allegations of a gang rape involving seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024. A former student, identified as Jane Doe, has filed a civil lawsuit against the fraternity members and the university, alleging she was drugged and assaulted.

The case has sparked significant controversy regarding the university's response. Jane Doe alleged in a letter to the faculty senate that President Michael Kotlikoff questioned why she waited several weeks to report the assault, a claim the university disputes by stating his remarks were directed at witnesses rather than the victim.

In response to the incident and subsequent public outcry, President Kotlikoff suspended all fraternity social events for the remainder of the academic year. The Cornell faculty senate is currently considering a no-confidence vote against Kotlikoff's leadership. While a local district attorney initially declined to bring charges in 2024, the criminal investigation has since been reopened and handed to New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor.
