Cornell University student anonymity protected by social media campaign

Thousands of social media users have launched a digital campaign to protect the anonymity of a student involved in a suspected gang rape case at Cornell University. Using the hashtag #IAmJaneDoe on platforms including TikTok, X, and Instagram, participants are collectively claiming to be the anonymous complainant to prevent her identity from being exposed.

The movement follows threats from political commentator Michael Tracey, who stated he intends to publicly reveal the student's name to “evaluate the veracity of her statements and those of her lawyers.” The online response aims to defend the legal right of sexual assault victims to remain anonymous during investigations.

The alleged incident involving seven fraternity members dates back to October 2024.
