Ex-Ilva workers launch national strikes across Italy

Workers at the ex-Ilva steel plants are engaged in widespread industrial action across Italy, including major sites in Taranto, Genoa, Novi Ligure, and Racconigi. Following the decision by Acciaierie d’Italia to suspend production in the Taranto hot area, unions including Fim, Fiom, Uilm, and Usb have proclaimed national strikes and permanent protests.

The crisis is driven by legal uncertainty, as the Court of Cassation is set to review orders to shut down production due to health and environmental concerns on October 20, 2026. Without a judicial reversal, the Taranto plants face a definitive shutdown. This poses a systemic risk to northern plants in Genoa and Novi Ligure, which depend on semi-finished products from Taranto. Unions are demanding that the government facilitate the purchase of raw materials like bramme and coils to maintain cold processing operations.

In Taranto, the protests have caused local disruptions, including road blockades on the SS7 and SS106 and fuel shortages affecting public transport. The Italian government has proposed economic measures, including 80 million euros for subcontracted industries and 45 million euros for direct workers, but unions have dismissed these as insufficient, calling for a comprehensive industrial relaunch plan rather than just redundancy funds.
