Cornwall Council defends affordable housing plans amid Penzance protest

Cornwall Council is facing a theatrical protest in Penzance regarding the redevelopment of Coinagehall Street. Campaigners, organized under the name ‘Random Act of Art’, plan to dress as flies and drag a large emoji of excrement along the seafront to the development site near Jubilee Pool.

The protesters accuse the council and its construction company, Treveth, of breaking a promise to provide 11 affordable homes as part of the project's second phase. They claim the development is prioritizing premium penthouses over the promised affordable housing.

In response, cabinet member for housing Cllr Peter La Broy has dismissed the claims as ‘misinformation’. The council and Treveth maintain that the affordable properties will still be delivered, but through a different funding mechanism than originally proposed.
