Cornwall deploys first UK AI camera to detect illegal U-turns

A new artificial intelligence camera has been installed on the Hayle Bypass section of the A30 in Cornwall to detect illegal U-turn manoeuvres. This marks the first use of such AI technology in the United Kingdom for this specific purpose.

The camera was implemented by National Highways in collaboration with Cornwall Council and Devon & Cornwall Police as part of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership. The initiative follows a U-turn ban established in 2021 after a series of serious collisions on the stretch of road. Since 2014, U-turns on this route have been linked to one death, six serious injuries, and 13 minor injuries.
