Cornwall mother suffocates son before suicide, inquest finds
An inquest in Bodmin, Cornwall, concluded that Tasmin Paterson, 31, suffocated her nine‑year‑old son Hudson before taking her own life. The bodies were discovered in a locked bedroom at their Fletchersbridge residence in September 2024.
Partner Marcus Hughes testified that their relationship had become fraught after he was caught using a dating site and that the couple were under financial and housing strain. Paterson had a history of a head injury that left her with mobility problems. Hughes said Hudson was “poorly” the night before his death, prompting his mother to share a room with him. The next morning Hughes knocked on the locked door, called their names, and after police assistance forced entry, finding both victims.
Senior coroner Andrew Cox noted that there was no evidence of physical violence toward Hudson and described Paterson as a devoted mother.
