Cornwall tourism levy and farming fund backed by PM

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed support for the introduction of an overnight tourism levy in Cornwall, describing the potential initiative as a “massive game changer” for the county.

During a visit to the region, the Prime Minister also unveiled a £65 million funding package intended for farmers to mitigate concerns that hot, dry weather could lead to increased food prices. His itinerary included visits to Colwyn Farm near Truro and The Arborist café in Killiow.

In addition to the tourism levy and agricultural support, the Prime Minister addressed devolution plans for the Duchy. While he has previously shown interest in a combined mayor-led authority model similar to Devon, he stated that the specific form of local devolution must be a “bottom up” process that feels right to the local population.
