Coroatá police arrest suspect after elderly man found in neglect

In Coroatá, Maranhão, the Civil Police rescued a 72-year-old man found living in degrading conditions in the rural village of Macaúba. The intervention followed a report from the Specialized Reference Center for Social Assistance (Creas).

Authorities discovered the elderly man lacked basic hygiene and was in a state of severe abandonment. A suspect responsible for the man's care was arrested in flagrante for mistreatment of an elderly person, a crime under the Statute of the Elderly. The suspect has been transferred to the Coroatá Resocialization Prison Unit, while the victim received medical attention at a local urgent care unit.
