Coronation Street to feature male breast cancer storyline
The ITV soap opera Coronation Street has announced a new storyline featuring the character Kit Green, a police officer who is diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. The plot follows the character's family, including Bernie Winter-Alahan and Gemma Winter-Brown, as they discover they may carry the BRCA gene mutation.
To ensure accuracy, the storyline was developed in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now. The narrative aims to highlight the reality of male breast cancer, a condition that affects approximately 500 men annually in the UK, accounting for less than 1% of all cases. Actor Jacob Roberts noted that the character's initial disbelief reflects the lack of awareness many men have regarding their own risk for the disease.
The arc is scheduled to begin in September and will depict Kit's journey through diagnosis, treatment, and the emotional impact on his family.
