Coroner Urges Inquiry into Baby Preston Davey's Murder After Sentences for Perpetrators

Thirteen‑month‑old Preston Davey was adopted by Jamie Varley and his partner John McGowan‑Fazakerley in Blackpool. Over a four‑month period the pair subjected the infant to physical, sexual and emotional abuse, culminating in his death on July 27, 2023. At Preston Crown Court Varley was handed a whole‑life order and McGowan‑Fazakerley received a 25‑year term.

Senior coroner Alan Wilson, speaking at Blackpool Coroner’s Court, said an inquest is "highly likely" and that the acts and omissions of public authorities involved in Preston's care should be examined in a public hearing, possibly in autumn 2027. He argued that such scrutiny is needed for the benefit of the child's family.

A former school colleague of Varley, who worked with him as a PCSO and later as head of year, described Varley's manipulative behaviour and said the case has led to harassment toward those linked to him. The colleague's remarks illustrate the broader personal impact of the crime beyond the courtroom.
