Coronie celebrates 175 years of district identity and future growth
The district of Coronie celebrated its 175th anniversary, marking the period since it was officially separated from Nickerie in October 1851. The commemoration focused on the district's historical identity and its future economic potential.
President Jennifer Simons highlighted the importance of rural development, noting that progress should not be limited to urban centers. She identified key growth sectors including agricultural innovation, the production of local goods like honey and coconut oil, tourism, and the cosmetic industry. To address challenges such as an aging population and youth migration, Simons emphasized the need for vocational training and improved living and working conditions.
Additionally, the President pointed toward future maritime and offshore developments off the Coronie coast, which may include the construction of a port and ‘guest to shore’ activities. Parliamentarian Leroy Doorson advocated for increased investment in healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship to ensure sustainable growth and the responsible use of natural resources.
