Corpamag and Afinia deliver bioclimatic nurseries in Magdalena
Corpamag and Afinia (a subsidiary of Grupo EPM) have delivered two bioclimatic nurseries in the Magdalena department of Colombia to support ecological restoration and environmental education. Located in the municipalities of Pijiño del Carmen and Guamal, these facilities are installed within local educational institutions: the Institución Educativa Departamental Pijiño del Carmen and the Institución Educativa Departamental Rural La Rinconada.
The nurseries are designed to be self-sustaining, utilizing 1.2 kW solar photovoltaic systems and automated irrigation via high-pressure micro-nebulizers. Each 120-square-meter structure can produce up to 5,000 seedlings per cycle, with an estimated annual production capacity of between 15,000 and 40,000 trees. The project aims to cultivate timber species such as oak, cedar, and ceiba, alongside fruit trees like papaya and guanábana.
Beyond plant production, the nurseries serve as living laboratories for environmental education, allowing students, teachers, and local communities to engage in biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management. This initiative fulfills environmental compensation obligations resulting from authorized forest exploitation by Afinia Grupo EPM – Caribe Mar de la Costa S.A.S.
