Corporate governance lags behind rapid Agentic AI adoption

The rapid adoption of Agentic AI is outpacing the development of organizational governance structures within companies. According to the SAP LeanIX Agentic AI Survey 2026, nearly half of all companies have not clearly defined who is responsible for managing their AI agents.

A Deloitte study from May indicates that while 27% of German companies are using Agentic AI to at least a moderate extent, only 19% possess mature governance frameworks. This gap highlights a shift in focus from selecting the most powerful Large Language Models to determining how these agents fundamentally change corporate organization.

Experts suggest that AI agents should be viewed as digital employees rather than mere software tools. This paradigm shift requires CIOs and executives to address new challenges, including defining accountability, measuring performance, and managing cybersecurity risks. Because autonomous agents access sensitive data and make independent decisions, they can become entry points for data loss or sophisticated cyberattacks if not properly integrated into existing workflows and permission concepts.
