Corporate social responsibility and the challenges of ESG metrics

Modern businesses face increasing pressure to address social objectives, including environmental sustainability, labor standards, and diversity, alongside traditional profit motives. This demand has led to an ecosystem of certifications and disclosure frameworks designed to provide transparency for consumers, investors, and policymakers.

However, the rise of these metrics introduces the “target trap,” a phenomenon where organizations adapt their behavior specifically to influence the indicators used to evaluate them. When a measure becomes a target for rewards or punishments, it may cease to be an accurate reflection of actual performance.

B Corp Certification serves as a prominent example of this trend. As a globally recognized standard, it requires companies to balance profit with purpose by considering stakeholders such as employees, customers, and the environment. While once more flexible, the certification process has become increasingly rigorous, reflecting the growing demand for genuine commitment to social and environmental capabilities.
