CorPower Ocean Secures First DNV Prototype Certification for Wave Energy Converter

CorPower Ocean’s C4 wave energy converter has been awarded the world’s first DNV Prototype Certificate under the DNV‑SE‑0120 standard. The certification confirms the device meets stringent requirements for structural strength, reliability and safety, including performance in storm waves of up to 18‑18.5 metres.

The 9‑metre‑diameter, 18‑metre‑tall, 100‑tonne buoy, equipped with a WaveSpring mechanism, now has a benchmark that reduces technology risk and opens project finance, insurance and institutional investment for commercial deployment. The company plans its first commercial wave farms – called CorPacks – off the coasts of Portugal (Aguçadoura) and Scotland, with expected operation between 2027 and 2029 and the capacity to generate hundreds of megawatts of continuous clean power.

Comments from CorPower Ocean’s co‑founder and CEO Patrik Möller described the milestone as “historic,” while DNV project manager Claudio Bittencourt Ferreira said the certificate marks an important step toward commercial wave energy.
