Corpus Christi faces potential water shortage due to drought and industry

Corpus Christi, Texas, faces a critical water shortage that could lead to severe deficits by September 2027. The crisis is driven by a combination of prolonged droughts and the high water demands of a growing petrochemical industry. One chemical complex launched in 2022 consumes as much water daily as the entire population of the city.

While the city is located on the Gulf of Mexico, it lacks the infrastructure to utilize seawater directly. Current supplies rely on retention reservoirs and groundwater wells, both of which have seen declining levels. Although recent rainfall provided some relief, it was insufficient to restore safe reserves.

A proposed large-scale desalination plant, intended to produce approximately 378 million liters of water per day, has been under discussion since 2017 but has not yet entered the construction phase due to administrative delays, investment disputes, and financing issues. In response, authorities have implemented water consumption restrictions and are considering the use of treated wastewater for industrial purposes, alongside potential temporary water shut-offs in certain districts.
