Corredor Bioceánico pre‑forum in San Pedro de Atacama discusses transport, security and community impacts

A pre‑forum for the Corredor Bioceánico de Capricornio was held on 5‑6 August in San Pedro de Atacama, bringing together officials from Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. The meetings examined security, infrastructure, citizen participation, indigenous rights and environmental concerns ahead of the main forum scheduled for November in Antofagasta.

Mayor Justo Zuleta stressed the need to balance economic development with the quality of life for local residents, while regional governor Ricardo Díaz warned that cargo traffic will increase gradually. Studies by the Inter‑American Development Bank are being used to model the expected rise in freight, and the regional government is planning rest‑area zones that could also foster local commerce. The corridor will not see an immediate surge of thousands of trucks, but a phased growth in cargo volumes.
