Corredor Oeste denounces Adif for destroying railway sleepers

The Corredor Oeste Ruta de la Plata platform has denounced Adif for its plan to destroy 35,000 railway sleepers that are reportedly in perfect condition. The collective argues these materials could be used to reopen the Astorga-La Bañeza section as a freight branch, a move seen as vital for the reindustrialization of the province following the closure of a local sugar refinery.

According to the group, many of the sleepers were manufactured as recently as 2018 and 2023. They claim that instead of reusing this public railway material, Adif intends to discard it during the renovation of the León-La Granja line. The platform describes the decision as a “malversación de dinero público en toda regla” (a total embezzlement of public money) and asserts that the destruction of these materials sabotages logistics and industrial development plans for Astorga and surrounding areas.
