Correios workers threaten September strike over restructuring plan

Workers at the Brazilian state-owned postal service, Correios, are threatening a national strike in September due to disagreements over a restructuring plan initiated in January. The federation Fentect and various unions are calling on President Lula to intervene, alleging that the current administration is endorsing measures intended to “destroy the company and pave the way for privatization.”

The restructuring plan includes the closure of certain agencies, the sale of real estate, a voluntary resignation program (PDV), and changes to the health insurance plan. Fentect's general secretary, Emerson Marinho, criticized the leadership of president Emmanoel Rondon, stating that workers will organize a large-scale stoppage if the company does not retreat from its current path of reducing rights.

In response, Correios stated that the restructuring measures aim to restore the company's financial health, ensure operational sustainability, and guarantee the continuity of services for the Brazilian population. The company emphasized that it maintains a permanent dialogue with worker representatives and warned that a strike could negatively impact the population, businesses, and the company's cash flow.
