Corrientes court sentences man to life for killing his mother

The Superior Tribunal of Justice of Corrientes has sentenced Gregorio Luciano Maciel to life imprisonment for the aggravated homicide of his mother, Ramona Francisca Ibarra. The ruling, issued via Sentence No. 223, overturned a previous acquittal by the Trial Court.

The incident occurred on November 15, 2024, in the locality of Itatí. According to the judicial reconstruction, Maciel was under the influence of alcohol and handling a .22 caliber pistol during a family argument. A shot struck Ibarra in the neck while she was seated in a gallery, causing fatal damage to vascular and visceral structures.

The decision was reached by a majority vote of the ministers, led by Alejandro Alberto Chaín, with support from Guillermo Horacio Semhan, Luis Eduardo Rey Vázquez, and Fernando Augusto Niz. Minister Eduardo Gilberto Panseri issued a dissenting vote regarding procedural guarantees. Because this is the first conviction against Maciel in positive jurisdiction, the defense retains the right to file a new cassation appeal before a different panel of judges to ensure the guarantee of double conformity.
