Corrientes forestry sector faces logistics hurdles amid wood industrialization push

The forestry and wood industry in Corrientes, Argentina, is facing both strategic opportunities and logistical challenges. Antonio Barros Perkins, the provincial Subsecretary of Industry, is promoting wood construction as a key component of the region's industrial development strategy. He noted that wood housing can offer cost savings of approximately 30% compared to traditional methods, while providing better thermal performance and faster construction times.

Perkins emphasized the need to move beyond exporting raw materials toward industrializing wood locally to add value. However, the sector's competitiveness is currently hindered by high logistics costs. Officials have noted that the transport of timber and finished products to ports and consumption centers is significantly expensive due to the state of rural roads, distances between forests and processing plants, and rising fuel costs. These logistical burdens affect the entire production chain, impacting regional employment and the local economy.
