Paraná River flooding triggers mass evacuations and fatalities in Argentina and Paraguay

Severe flooding driven by the El Niño phenomenon is impacting the Triple Frontier region, affecting parts of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. In Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, the situation has turned fatal following the death of a 58-year-old woman after her home collapsed. Over 1,200 people have been evacuated in the area, with significant focus on the San Rafael and San Agustín neighborhoods.

In Argentina, the Paraná River's rise has triggered alerts in Corrientes, where the river exceeded 6.50 meters, and in Chaco, where a red alert was issued due to projected levels reaching 7.50 meters. In Santa Fe, a massive emergency operation is underway to evacuate between 150,000 and 230,000 head of cattle from river islands to higher ground.

Authorities at Itaipú Binacional have warned of a severe flood risk due to high water inflow. Meanwhile, in Misiones, the Iguazú National Park has seen closures of certain areas, and river crossing services to Paraguay have been suspended. Meteorological forecasts indicate further heavy rainfall is expected, which may exacerbate the saturation of river basins and increase flood levels.
