Corrientes health officials warn of rising HIV and syphilis cases among youth

Health specialists in Corrientes, Argentina say the number of HIV and syphilis infections among people aged 19 to 35 has risen dramatically, with syphilis cases increasing about 71% over the past decade. The rise is attributed to limited information, stigma around medical visits, and low condom use. Gynaecologist Belén Ortigueira warned that these diseases often show no early symptoms, delaying diagnosis and facilitating transmission. She stressed the need for stronger sexual‑education programs, consistent condom use, routine testing—including prenatal screening—to protect both mothers and babies.

Effective treatment exists for syphilis, while modern HIV therapies can control the virus but not cure it. Preventive measures and early medical consultation are presented as the primary tools to curb further spread.
