Corrientes Senate approves compensation plan for livestock lost to predator attacks

The Senate of Corrientes has granted partial approval to a legislative project aimed at creating the Provincial Plan for the Conservation of Large Felids. The initiative seeks to balance agricultural production with the protection of wildlife, specifically pumas and jaguars.

Under the proposed plan, the provincial state would provide financial compensation to rural producers who suffer livestock losses due to predator attacks. Once an attack is officially verified by an inter-institutional committee—comprising security forces and other public agencies—the state must pay the indemnity within a maximum of 30 days. Compensation may be provided in cash, through the replacement of livestock, or via supplies for coexistence measures, calculated based on the market value of the lost animal.

The plan will be funded through a dedicated provincial fund, utilizing resources from the Rural Development Fund, the provincial budget, donations, or agreements with public and private organizations. To qualify, producers must formalize a complaint and register it within seven days of the incident. The project now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for further legislative processing.
