Corsan launches 50% water‑bill discount for 240,000 families in Rio Grande do Sul
Corsan has begun automatically granting a 50% discount on water and sewage bills to about 240,000 low‑income families in Rio Grande do Sul, effective 1 August. The Tarifa Social benefit applies to consumption of up to 15 m³ per month and is provided without the need for a request for families whose data are up‑to‑date in the CadÚnico registry and who meet income or vulnerability criteria.
The utility is combining data‑cross‑matching with on‑the‑ground outreach, including neighbourhood mutinies, to identify additional eligible households. Corsan plans to expand the program to roughly 615,000 families, potentially covering up to two million residents. President Samanta Takimi said, “Our commitment is to ensure no family misses out because of lack of information or registration difficulties. Tarifa Social is more than a discount; it is an instrument of inclusion.”
A typical household saving could be about R$ 1,193 per year.
