Corsica faces heatwave and Saharan dust pollution alert
Corsica is facing a dual environmental crisis as a heatwave coincides with high levels of fine particle pollution. The organization Qualitair Corse has issued an alert for the entire island following the arrival of Saharan desert dust, which has significantly increased PM10 concentrations. The pollution was first detected on the western coast on Wednesday evening, with South Corsica being particularly affected before the dust plume moves toward Haute-Corse.
Simultaneously, Météo-France has placed both Corsican departments under an orange heatwave alert. The combination of hot air masses and the sirocco effect is expected to drive temperatures above 40°C. The prefecture of Haute-Corse indicates that the heat alert is expected to remain in effect until at least midnight on Friday.
Authorities are advising sensitive individuals to avoid intense physical exertion, particularly those with respiratory or cardiac issues. Recommendations also include limiting emissions from vehicles, industry, and heating, as well as prioritizing non-polluting modes of transport.
