Cortazar commemorates 104 years of the Puente Colgante
The municipality of Cortazar recently commemorated the 104th anniversary of its emblematic suspension bridge, known as the Puente Colgante. The civic ceremony was led by Mayor Mauricio Estefanía and local government officials to honor the structure's cultural and architectural heritage.
Originally inaugurated on August 26, 1922, the bridge was designed by French architect Ernest Brunel. Its construction was a significant historical project intended to prevent the municipality from becoming isolated during rainy seasons when the Laja River would flood. The inauguration ceremony was attended by then-President of Mexico, Álvaro Obregón, though the event was reportedly interrupted by a technical malfunction involving the bridge's cables that caused the structure to sag, leading the presidential delegation to withdraw temporarily for safety.
Today, the bridge remains a key symbol of local identity and an important architectural landmark in the state of Guanajuato.
