Italy implements strict urban decorum rules in several tourist cities

Several Italian municipalities are implementing strict new ordinances to combat overtourism and maintain urban decorum.

In Cortina d'Ampezzo, Mayor Gianluca Lorenzi has introduced regulations to address behaviors described as ‘turismo cafone’ (crass tourism). Effective through October 15, 2026, the rules prohibit improvised camping, sleeping in public spaces on benches, and picnicking on historical monuments or church steps. The ordinance also includes guidelines for appropriate clothing in the town center to prevent indecency. Violators face fines ranging from 25 to 500 euros.

Tropea has enacted similar measures to preserve its historic center. From August 14 to September 12, 2026, Mayor Giovanni Macrì has banned the sale of takeaway alcohol and its consumption in public spaces, such as streets and squares, between 10:30 PM and 6:00 AM. The goal is to reduce litter, noise, and uncontrolled wandering, while still allowing consumption within licensed establishments.

Additionally, Pesaro has extended its summer nightlife ordinances until September 12, 2026. Mayor Andrea Biancani noted that the measures, which include glass bans and cleaning requirements, aim to balance a vibrant social scene for youth and tourists with public safety and cleanliness.
