Cortisol's impact on stress‑related weight gain and overall health

Cortisol, often called the stress hormone, rises during prolonged stress and can affect appetite, metabolism and fat storage. Elevated cortisol may increase insulin, leading to greater storage of visceral fat around the belly and heightened cravings for sugary and refined foods. Nutrition therapist Helena Barham‑Coppola notes that many clients are unaware of chronic stress and its hormonal effects.

While high cortisol levels can contribute to weight gain and disrupted sleep, the hormone also plays vital roles in regulating metabolism, blood‑sugar control, immune response and anti‑inflammatory processes. Nutritionist Sophie Trotman and GP Chandni Rajani stress that balanced cortisol supports focus, memory and resilience. Experts advise managing cortisol through adequate sleep, regular exercise, stress‑reduction techniques, balanced nutrition and limiting stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine.
