Cortisol’s Role in Morning Energy and Stress Management

Cortisol, often called the stress hormone, naturally rises in the early morning, reaching its peak about 30–45 minutes after waking to supply the body with the energy needed to start the day. This “cortisol awakening response” supports alertness, attention and glucose release for muscle use.

When chronic stress keeps cortisol levels elevated beyond this normal rhythm, the balance is disturbed. Persistent high cortisol can cause fatigue after waking, difficulty sleeping, weight gain—especially around the abdomen and face—and cravings for sugary foods. Physical signs may include skin thinning, facial redness, easy bruising, sustained high blood pressure and frequent headaches. Over time the adrenal glands are over‑taxed, which further drains the body.

Experts advise restoring the natural cortisol cycle through regular, high‑quality sleep, moderate daily exercise, and relaxation practices such as meditation, walking in nature or yoga. Consistent lifestyle habits help the hormone drop gradually throughout the day, reducing the negative health effects of chronic stress.
