Corts Valencianes reaches consensus on Thalidomide tax relief law
The Corts Valencianes has reached a consensus on a proposed law to provide tax relief for victims of Thalidomide. The measure, introduced by the Compromís party, aims to eliminate the regional IRPF (income tax) payment on state compensations previously awarded to those affected by the drug.
During the session, deputy Francesc Roig described the initiative as a way to “help repair one of the greatest human tragedies in this country.” The drug, prescribed to pregnant women in the 1950s to combat nausea, caused severe physical disabilities in children. While the national government approved indemnities a year ago, these payments were included in income tax calculations, leading to tax liabilities for the victims.
The proposal seeks to create a specific deduction for the regional portion of the tax. If the PP, Vox, and PSPV parties agree to process the law via a single reading, its approval could be finalized immediately.
