Corumbá technical group manages jaguar sightings near urban areas

An inter-institutional technical group is intensifying efforts in Corumbá, Brazil, to manage the presence of jaguars near urban and peri-urban areas. The group follows recent sightings of the big cats, including a recent incident where a jaguar predated a domestic dog in a rural property.

The technical group includes IBAMA, CENAP/ICMBio, the Corumbá City Hall through the Pantanal Environmental Foundation (FMAP), the Instituto Homem Pantaneiro (IHP), and Instituto Jaguarte. Their primary goal is to reduce conflicts and promote safe coexistence between the local population and the wildlife.

Ongoing actions include environmental education programs, such as the ‘Tem Onça na Rua’ initiative, continuous monitoring via camera traps, and the development of a Human-Jaguar Coexistence Plan. Authorities emphasize that because Corumbá is located within the Pantanal, the presence of jaguars is a natural occurrence that requires permanent prevention and mitigation strategies rather than just individual animal removal.
