Moldova railway sector to undergo reorganization into two companies
The Moldovan railway sector is set for a major reorganization, with plans to separate infrastructure management from transport services. By the end of 2026, the state enterprise Calea Ferată din Moldova will be split into two distinct joint-stock companies: SA CFM-Infra, which will manage the railway infrastructure, and SA Calea Ferată din Moldova – Pasageri și Marfă, which will handle passenger and freight transport services.
The reform, adopted by law on October 8, 2026, was discussed during a public-private dialogue organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Moldova. The meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development and various logistics and transport companies.
Discussions focused on improving competitiveness, ensuring predictable tariffs, and facilitating private operator access to the infrastructure. While rail transport currently accounts for approximately 12.4% of freight volume in Moldova, the sector saw a 23% increase in freight volume during the first half of 2026, highlighting its growth potential.
