Corvinus University deputy rector Szabó Lajos György resigns amid governance overhaul

Szabó Lajos György, the deputy rector of Corvinus University in Budapest, submitted a resignation letter announcing his departure from the institution. He said his exit is not linked to recent scandals, including the exam‑fraud case that led to the dismissal of lecturer Ádám Zoltán, and emphasized that he had planned the resignation before recent political changes. He also promised to present new evidence supporting his position after leaving. He wrote, “Ezért az unokáid is szégyenkezni fognak, téged egy jobb kocsmába se engednének be”.

The resignation comes as the university undergoes a broader governance transformation. The Hungarian government has reclaimed foundation rights of formerly foundation‑run universities, and a new curatorial and senate restructuring is scheduled, with debates over whether the changes represent genuine democratization or a continuation of previous power structures. Former rector Hernádi Zsolt, who led the university after the 2019 model change, left in June, and Belgian academic Bruno van Pottelsberghe has been appointed the new rector.
