Corvus Energy wins contract for BC Ferries' new hybrid vessels

Corvus Energy has secured a major contract to supply Battery Energy Storage Systems (ESS) for four new hybrid-electric passenger and car ferries for British Columbia Ferry Services (BC Ferries). The vessels, part of the new Summit Class, are named Summit Arbutus, Summit Cedar, Summit Maple, and Summit Spruce.

Corvus will initially deliver 10MWh of battery capacity per vessel, placing them among the ferries with the highest installed battery capacity globally. The contract also includes the supply of interfaces and control systems to allow for a future expansion to 70MWh per vessel. This scalability is intended to enable nearly emission-free operation for up to two hours as charging infrastructure is developed.

The technology utilized will be the Corvus Dolphin NxtGen Power system, a liquid-cooled battery solution designed for high energy density and enhanced safety. BC Ferries selected Corvus based on their previous work with the company’s Island Class fleet and their established operational presence in British Columbia.
