Sulmona water crisis sparks criticism of SACA and mayor over high losses

The regional water authority (SACA) faced criticism after suggesting that citizens were misusing water in Sulmona. Activists highlighted that more than 60% of the water supply is lost due to outdated infrastructure, with official figures showing a 59.8‑62.5% loss rate. They called for the SACA and the mayor, Luca Tirabassi, to coordinate a response rather than blame residents and demanded an urgent irrigation ban ordinance.

Activists also warned that the current water management plan prioritises coastal tourism and industry, risking further shortages for interior communities. They urged the implementation of structural repairs to the water network and the use of alternative irrigation sources to protect public health and the town’s green spaces.
