Cosenza Investigation into Death of Mohamed Amin Bessioud

Mohamed Amin Bessioud, a 25‑year‑old of Tunisian origin and Italian citizenship, died after jumping from the balcony of his Cosenza home during a Carabinieri search on 24 July 2026. The search reportedly uncovered hashish, and the young man, who was under house arrest for minor drug offenses and participating in a rehabilitation program, was already in a fragile psychological state. The prosecutor in Cosenza opened a formal investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and to review the police intervention.

Family lawyer Osvaldo Rocca, Caritas Diocesana, the Migrantes office and the activist collective “La Base” have demanded full transparency and a review of police conduct, arguing that the operation’s handling may have triggered the tragedy. The mother, overwhelmed by grief, threatened to jump from her own balcony after her son’s death. Public protests have been organised, and multiple statements call for accountability and better safeguards for vulnerable individuals during law‑enforcement actions.
