Cosmic filaments and stellar matter observations reveal new galactic insights

Researchers have discovered that cosmic filaments significantly influence the birth of stars within galaxies. Using the Simba cosmological and hydrodynamic simulation, scientists observed that during the early stages of the universe, these filaments acted as highways, supplying galaxies with the gas necessary for star formation.

However, this relationship evolves over time. In the current era of the universe, the environment surrounding these filaments tends to produce hot gas, which slows the arrival of the cold gas required for new stars to form. Observations from the COSMOS field have confirmed these simulation predictions, suggesting that the cosmic web directly affects the internal evolution of galaxies. Future data from the Euclid mission is expected to expand this research.

In a separate astronomical finding, astronomers using the MOTHRA instrument in Chile have identified 22 faint arcs around the Helix Nebula, located approximately 650 light-years away. These arcs represent fragments of stellar matter being dispersed into space as the nebula—formed from a dying star similar to our Sun—expands. The arcs are created by shocks as dense fragments move through the interstellar medium, providing new insights into the lifecycle of planetary nebulae.
