Cost-of-living pressures drive fuel theft and household hardship in Australia

Rising cost-of-living pressures are impacting various sectors of society in Australia. In the Shoalhaven region, working families are increasingly struggling to afford essentials, leading some to let insurance policies lapse, allow car registrations to expire, or avoid medical and dental care to prioritize food and housing. In response, the Shoalhaven Anti-Poverty Committee is organizing the Shoalhaven Nourish and Nurture Drive from September 7 to October 16 to collect non-perishable food and hygiene products.

Broadening the scope to New South Wales, a report from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics indicates that financial hardship is a primary driver of fuel theft. The study found that a 1% increase in living costs is linked to a 6% increase in petrol theft, whereas a 1% increase in fuel prices only correlates to a 1% increase in theft. The bureau noted that theft rates are rising among broader community members, not just a specific criminal subclass, and reported an increase in aggression toward service station staff. The Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association confirmed that these spikes in theft have been recorded nationwide.
