Costa Brava tourism drives summer water demand and waste surge

The Costa Brava region in Catalonia attracts visitors with its crystal‑clear waters, cliffs and hidden coves. Three easy, family‑friendly hiking routes – from Calella de Palafrugell to Llafranc, the Agra‑Sa Conca walk, and the Tamariu to Sant Sebastià lighthouse trail – are promoted as ideal ways to explore the coastline.

During the peak summer months, tourism sharply raises water use and waste production. Municipalities such as Platja d'Aro, Blanes, Palafrugell, Lloret and Roses see 30‑40 % of their annual water consumption and a quarter of all urban waste generated in just July and August. In Platja d'Aro, August water use can be six times that of February, and the town’s population more than doubles with seasonal residents. Mayor Maurici Jiménez says the town has improved water‑network efficiency to 81 % and is planning new wells to become self‑sufficient for nine months of the year.
