Costa Coffee drinks found to have highest caffeine levels in UK study
A new study by consumer watchdog Which? has revealed significant variations in caffeine levels across popular UK high street coffee chains. The research analyzed drinks from Costa, Starbucks, Caffè Nero, Greggs, and Pret A Manger.
Costa was found to have the highest caffeine content in several categories. A medium cappuccino from Costa contains 325mg of caffeine, which is approximately equivalent to four cans of Red Bull and more than three times the amount found in a Starbucks cappuccino (89mg). Costa also leads in caffeine for espresso shots (100mg) and flat whites (241mg).
While Starbucks generally serves the lowest caffeine levels, the study noted that its caffeine content in espressos, cappuccinos, and filter coffees has increased over the last three years. Conversely, Caffè Nero has seen a notable rise, with its cappuccino caffeine levels doubling since the previous 2023 study to reach 221mg.
In terms of espresso strength, Pret A Manger's single shot contains 180mg, significantly higher than Starbucks' 45mg. For matcha latte drinkers, Costa's version contains 99mg, while Pret's contains the least at 28mg. Experts advise consumers, particularly pregnant individuals or those monitoring intake for health reasons, to be aware of these variations.
