Costa Coffee launches dual‑swirl scone in Saltash to settle jam‑vs‑cream tea debate
Costa Coffee commissioned a UK‑wide survey that found 71% of Britons prefer jam to be spread first on a scone, while 29% back the Devon‑style cream‑first method. In response, the chain created a “50/50” dual‑swirl scone that pipes jam and clotted cream onto a scone simultaneously.
The inaugural dual‑swirl scone was served at Costa’s Saltash store – situated on the Devon‑Cornwall border – to the mayors of Saltash and Kingsbridge, Councillors Brian Stoyel and Julia Wingate. Stoyel said, “We’re proud that Saltash has become the home of Britain’s latest chapter in the great scone debate.” The launch is presented as a playful compromise for a rivalry that still provokes strong feelings in about a third of the population.
