Costa dei Trabocchi offers quiet Adriatic escape in Italy

The Costa dei Trabocchi, a 70-kilometer stretch of the Adriatic coast in Italy's Abruzzo region, is emerging as a destination for travelers seeking to avoid crowded tourist hubs. Located primarily in the province of Chieti between Pescara and San Salvo, the area is characterized by turquoise waters, pebble beaches, and green hills.

The coastline is named after the “Trabocchi,” historic wooden fishing installations built on stilts directly in the sea. With documented origins dating back to 1627, these structures originally allowed fishermen to catch fish using long booms and nets without needing boats. Today, many of these platforms have been repurposed into restaurants, allowing guests to dine over the water.

Natural highlights of the region include the Punta Aderci nature reserve near Vasto, which offers untouched landscapes and hiking trails leading to various coves and beaches, such as Punta Penna and Mottagross.
