Costa Rica and Argentina report high bird species counts in global observation events
Costa Rica and Argentina have demonstrated significant biodiversity through recent global birdwatching initiatives. In Costa Rica, the community of Boca Tapada contributed the sighting of 240 bird species during the Maquenque bird festival. This effort helped place the country within the top 10 globally for birdwatching activity. The event, held within the Maquenque Mixed Wildlife Refuge, drew 200 participants, including a delegation from India, and involved local businesses and tourism guides.
In Argentina, participation in the Global Big Day saw 1,141 local observers record 757 species across the country via the eBird Argentina platform. This event was part of a larger international effort that engaged over 50,000 enthusiasts and scientists worldwide, resulting in the identification of 7,895 species. Argentina’s involvement highlights its strategic position in nature tourism, supported by its diverse ecoregions that house more than 1,000 bird species.
