Costa Rica and Peru advance security reforms and international crime cooperation

Costa Rica is implementing significant security and judicial reforms to combat organized crime and corruption. The government is inaugurating the Center for High Containment of Organized Crime (CACCO) in Alajuela, a high-security facility inspired by El Salvador’s penitentiary model. This move follows allegations of abuse during security sweeps at the La Reforma prison, which authorities deny.

On the international stage, Costa Rica is strengthening ties to fight narcotics. This includes a visit by the Minister of Public Security to the Netherlands to coordinate with the Port of Rotterdam, and a maritime alliance with Colombia supported by the United States to secure sea routes. Additionally, Costa Rica hosted an INTERPOL regional conference involving 19 countries to address illicit financial flows and transnational crime.

In Peru, President Keiko Fujimori is focusing on prison reform and security. During a visit to the El Milagro prison in Trujillo, she announced plans to invite El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele to Peru to discuss security strategies. Fujimori also confirmed an upcoming official trip to El Salvador to study their high-containment prison model and discuss potential trade and health cooperation.
